Assertion and reason type of questions test the candidate's cognizance and with it, his ability to reason out correctly. In this type of questions, two verbal expressions are given labelled as Assertion (A) and Reason (R) along with five alternatives. Candidate has to find the correct alternative.

Directions : In each of the questions given below, there are two statements labelled as Assertion (A) and Reason (R).
Mark your answer as per the codes provided below ;
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) A is false but R is true.
(e) Both A and R are false.


1. Assertion (A) : Copper is used to make electric wires.
Reason (R) : Copper has very low electrical resistance.

Answer : (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation :
A low electrical resistance of copper makes it a good electrical conductor. So, it is used to make electric wires.

2. Assertion (A) : The pouring of kerosene oil on stagnant pools helps to eradicate malaria.
Reason (R) : The kerosene oil is poisonous for the mosquitoes.

Answer : (c) A is true but R is false.
Explanation :
The kerosene oil sprayed on the water provides a thin coating and the larvae of mosquitoes are prevented from coming off to breathe. Thus they die.

3. Assertion (A) : Baking soda creates acidity in the stomach.
Reason (R) : Baking soda is alkaline.

Answer : (d) A is false but R is true.
Explanation :
Baking soda, being alkaline, neutralises the acidity of the stomach and removes it.

4. Assertion (A) : Indus Valley people knew the art of navigation.
Reason (R) : Indus Valley seals indicate prevalence of overseas trade.

Answer : (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation :
The seals found at Indus valley sides gave evidence of overseas trade, which was possible only with the knowledge of the art of navigation.

5. Assertion (A) : Bangladesh imports jute from India.
Reason (R) : Bangladesh has most of the jute mills.

8.Assertion (A) : An electric bulb makes a bang when it is broken.
Reason (R) : The air inside the bulb rushes out immediately on breaking.

Explanation :
There is a vacuum inside the electric bulb. When the bulb breaks, air rushes in at great speed from all sides to fill the vacuum, thus producing a bang.

Explanation :
Inside the Earth, the high temperature and pressure keep the metals in molten state. The Earth does not absorb the sun's rays but reflects them.

11. Assertion (A) : The same side of the Moon faces the Earth at all times.
Region : Moon is the only natural satellite of Earth.

Answer : (b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
Explanation :
The Moon rotates on its axis once in 27 days and it also takes the same time to revolve around the Earth. So, only one side of the Moon remains visible on Earth.

12. Assertion (A) : In India, the judiciary is independent of the executive.
Reason (R) : Judiciary favours the government and helps in the implementation of its plans.

Explanation :

Reason (R) : The decrease in weight is due to the higher density of the displaced liquid.

Explanation :

Reason (R) : Hard water contains many minerals.

Clothes are not washed properly in hard water because it does not form lather with soap. However, it is true that hard water contains many minerals.

17. Assertion (A) : Leakages in household gas cylinders can be detected.
Reason (R) : LPG has a strong smell.

Answer : (c) A is true but R is false.
Explanation :
Leakages in household gas cylinders can be detected because of the strong smell of ethanethiol also known as ethyl mercaptan mixed with LPG.

18. Assertion (A) : Simla is colder than Delhi.
Reason (R) : Simla is at a higher altitude as compared to Delhi.

Answer : (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation :
Simla is colder than Delhi because it is situated at a higher altitude and temperature decreases by 1°C for every 165 meter of ascent.

19. Assertion (A) : The use of chlorofluorocarbons is banned throughout the world nowadays.
Reason (R) : These chemicals cause skin cancer.

Reason (R) : Sprouting kills many vital vitamins.

Answer : (e) Both A and R are false.
Explanation :
Sprouted grains should be consumed because sprouting enhances the nutrient content of the grains.
